Tianjin, People’s Republic of China, 10 September 2012 – Dimagi Inc. co-founders, Jonathan Jackson and Vikram Sheel Kumar, and twenty-five other social entrepreneurs have been recognized by the Schwab Foundation as 2012 Social Entrepreneur awardees. Selected from a pool of more than 1,000 global applicants, the co-founders were recognized for their innovative approach and demonstrated impact with Dimagi’s mHealth platform called CommCare.
CommCare is an innovative mobile technology platform for community health workers (CHWs) and frontline extension workers that seeks to boost workers’ abilities through improved access, quality, experience and accountability. CommCare has a mobile phone app and web interface used by non-governmental organizations, public health organizations, research institutions and governments which allows resource-challenged health programs to store and access patient information and monitor at-risk patients through mobile phones made available to remote health facilities. CommCare contains checklists and educational prompts to help health workers promote healthy behaviors that have been shown to reduce mortality and disease in low-income populations. Together over 300,000 home visits have been recorded thus far, with the majority of these projects tailored to strengthen community-based efforts to improve maternal and child health. CommCare has evolved out of Dimagi’s extensive work in the past 10 years in technical strategy, systems design, software development, and health research for over 100 projects across 25 countries.
“We developed CommCare because it has proven difficult to scale up the health impact demonstrated in research studies by community health programs,” says Dimagi CEO, Jonathan Jackson. “We’ve been working in this field for a long time, and we strongly believe that taking a product platform approach to ICT projects is the key to building sustainable programs to expand the effective delivery of life saving interventions. We greatly appreciate the Schwab Foundations’ acknowledgement and support.”
Hilde Schwab, Co-Founder and Chairperson of the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship, will present the awards during a reception at the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting of New Champions on September 11, 2012. Dimagi co-founders, CMO Vikram Sheel Kumar and CEO Jonathan Jackson, will be accepting the award on behalf of Dimagi Inc at the awards ceremony on Tianjin.
As a 2012 Awardee, Dimagi is excited to become part of the broader Schwab Foundation community of Social Entrepreneurs, which includes 225 social entrepreneurs from more than 70 countries.
